PIER, Physicians’ Information and Education Resource, is an electronic medical resource from the American College of Physicians that provides healthcare professionals, educators, students, managers, insurers, policy makers and others with:
  • Rapid access to actionable, evidence-based guidelines to improve the quality of patient care and save clinicians valuable time
  • Trusted educational resources to facilitate patient-provider communication and shared decision-making
  • Lifelong learning with a universe of clinical information at the user’s fingertips
  • Clinical data, tools and integrated connectivity to easily build whatever is needed in an information system
  • The ability to reduce costs and medical errors through integration with EMRs, order entry, hospital information and practice management systems

Access reliable, peer-reviewed medical evidence updated in real-time, to make sound clinical decisions

  • All PIER modules are updated continually by editorial consultants with the support of periodic searches of the medical literature performed by experts in evidence-based medicine
  • Unlike most guidelines, PIER includes recommendations based on all levels of medical evidence, including RCTs, cohort and observational studies, case reports, and expert opinion
  • Recommendations in PIER include strength-of-recommendation ratings based on the quality of underlying evidence, and each cited reference is graded according to level of evidence
  • All PIER content is rigorously peer-reviewed
  • A “What's New” section on both the PIER homepage and the opening screen of each module highlights new, relevant material

Proceed logically through frontline clinical information and supporting data using PIER’s quick and efficient “drill down” format

Structured in a layered format, PIER modules are designed to allow you to drill down from more general to specific, targeted information, with immediate access to underlying supporting evidence from the medical literature. PIER sections include:

  • Disease modules: Modules for hundreds of diseases (with new modules added on a continual basis), structured uniformly to facilitate the clinical workflow, are PIER's core. Each module presents a series of succinct guidance statements and practice recommendations, supported by more detailed levels of pertinent rationale and evidence. Disease-based modules include the following sections:

    • Prevention
    • Screening
    • Diagnosis
    • Consultation for Diagnosis
    • Hospitalization
    • Non-drug Therapy
    • Drug Therapy
    • Patient Education
    • Consultation for Management
    • Follow-up

Each disease module also includes five standard tables:

    • History and Physical Examination
    • Laboratory and Other Studies
    • Differential Diagnosis
    • Drug Treatment
    • Elements of Follow-up

Tabular material is standardized to allow easy access to information; additional tables and figures are included as needed. Each module also includes a section of Additional Resources for Clinical Information, Educational Resources, and/or Patient Information.

  • Screening and Prevention modules: Best evidence to support rational use of screening and prevention measures in healthy people
  • Complementary/Alternative Medicine(CAM) modules: Overview of the harms and benefits of CAM modalities used in the management of common medical problems
  • Ethical and Legal Issues modules: Background and guidance in approaching common legal and ethical dilemmas that arise in daily practice
  • Procedures modules: Details of commonly ordered diagnostic and therapeutic tests and interventions
  • Drug Resource: Comprehensive, clinically-relevant, real-time drug information from Clinical Pharmacology, including all U.S. prescription drugs, as well as hard-to-find coverage of herbal supplements, nutritional and over-the-counter products, and new and Phase III investigational drugs (may be purchased as an optional integrated resource)
  • Clinical Presentations: Flow-diagram approaches to diagnosing undifferentiated symptoms, signs, and laboratory abnormalities (coming soon)

Read what healthcare professionals say about PIER

“I have found [PIER] to be a very useful resource for help with several day-to-day patient management questions. In addition, the layout is very well done and easy to sift through.”

“I found PIER easy to navigate and could find information very quickly. By typing in two or three key words, the specific information being sought was found immediately.”

“PIER targets the answers; other electronic resources force you to scroll and look for the answer. In diagnosis or treatment, for example, you can zone in on what you’re seeking and funnel down more quickly.”

“I could quickly get the information needed to answer a question, with the reference information there to refer to later.”
